It was a beautiful July afternoon in Bala to celebrate Muskoka’s LGBTQ2+ community in Muskoka Lakes!

Church lawn and Margaret Burgess Park was awash in rainbow colours for the PRIDE-BQ event hosted by your Chamber, Muskoka Pride and the Bala United Church.

Over 70 people met for an affirming Pride church service and BBQ outside of Bala United Church on Sunday, July 21, 2019. Following the service, attendees enjoyed live music and lunch generously provided by Chamber member, Muskoka Launch Livery. Passersby strolling in Margaret Burgess Park joined in with the fun.

Reverend Sue Woods led the congregation through an affirmation service that encouraged all to welcome, include, and celebrate diversity. Norah Fountain, Executive Director of the Muskoka Lakes Chamber of Commerce, explained, “Our continuing support of the LGBTQ2+ community and visitors is of high importance. We plan to continue championing Muskoka Lakes as a warm and welcoming destination for all people. Events like this allow us to demonstrate our longstanding commitment to inclusivity.” After the service, volunteers prepared a BBQ lunch for everyone and attendees enjoyed a sunny afternoon in Margaret Burgess Park.

A big thank you to Muskoka Launch Livery for providing a delicious lunch and Tom’s Café (along with our own Chamber tourism ambassador Elisabeth Boyle) for the live music. Thanks as well to the Bala United Church affirmation committee, Chamber and Muskoka Pride volunteers. This event was a part of the 2019 Muskoka Pride Festival. On Monday, July 22, the Chamber also took part in the flag raising at the Township of Muskoka Lakes municipal building in Port Carling.
