The Muskoka Lakes Museum
The Muskoka Lakes Museum in Port Carling Ontario exists to collect, document, preserve, research, exhibit and interpret the collection in order to share the history, settlement and development of the Muskoka Lakes area. The Museum places emphasis on the boat building industry in Muskoka and serves the public by hosting public programming, events, exhibitions, written publications, and research services.
Job Description
Muskoka Lakes Museum stores and exhibits close to five thousand artifacts and archival materials related to the history and culture of Muskoka lakes area. The objective of the Curatorial & Collection Assistant is to interpret, preserve, catalogue, digitize and exhibit these collections through updated records, online platforms and gallery tours to foster public engagement and learning of the area’s local cultural heritage.
Job Tasks
· Creating and scheduling online exhibits in coordination with the Marketing Chair.
· Cataloguing the collection and updating records.
· Conducting gallery and Walking Tours.
· Generating a plan for the digitization of the Walking Tour.
· Aiding the Museum Manager in accessioning artifacts and maintaining the collections.
· Visitor desk duties including: admission, membership, donation, and gift shop sales; stocking and managing the gift shop; and answering inquiries regarding artifacts and galleries.
· Other relevant tasks as assigned by the Museum Manager.
Requirements
· Asset: Having/working toward a program in Museum Studies, Conservation, Archaeology, History, or a related field.
· Asset: Experience with PastPerfect or other cataloguing software
· Interest in and/or experience in curating.
· Interest in and/or experience in collections management.
· Computer literacy with Microsoft Suites, DropBox, Canva and various social media platforms.
· Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
· Self-motivated and outgoing.
· Organized.
· Standard First Aid (by start of employment).
· Canadian citizen or a permanent resident, or have refugee status in Canada (non-Canadians holding temporary work visas or awaiting permanent resident status are noneligible).
· Legally entitled to work in Canada (have a valid social insurance number).
· Between 16 and 30 years of age inclusively at the start of employment; and are a high school, college, CEGEP or university student.
